An old link but good to get thinking about how we use the latest technology.

Travels with iPod @ National Geographic Traveler

Ubiquitous MP3 players have altered the way we travel.

Electronic devices such as BlackBerrys and Treos changed business trips. Now MP3 portable music players—most notably the industry’s standard-bearer, Apple’s iPod—are fast doing the same for leisure excursions. Aside from bringing Dean Martin along to “Mambo Italiano” on a trip to Capri, travelers can now download everything from an unabridged copy of The Da Vinci Code for beachside listening, to an audio tour of Pompeii. Here are nine ways to use your iPod while on the road:

Listed are 9 ways to be plugged into your mp3 player all day listening to regional music; a topical novel; audio guidebooks- rough words?;not missing the news from back home; storing your own sounds and pics; finding your way with maps and even your favorite TV shows.

So that is why everybody at the airport is squinting at the palm of their hand!

… and if you thought that was all there was to use:

Hilton Hotels have begun phasing out their old clocks in favor of new models in which you can dock your iPod. Toto, a Japanese toilet company, has just embedded an MP3 player in one of its models; a pit stop in Tokyo may never be the same. And now even that low-tech icon, the Swiss army knife, is no longer immune. A new version shipped last November with an MP3 player in it, too.

Forget about the Swiss army knife for travelling abroad!

How do you use your mp3 player or other gizmos whilst travelling?

My best buy was the purchase of a set of 'Sennheiser noise eliminating headphones' - great for my palm T5 player and for the inflight movies - it surprised me as to how effective they were in reducing the ambient aircraft engine noise, much less stress on those long journeys.
